Art produced in a traditional fashion by peasants, seamen, country artisans, or tradespeople with no formal training, or by members of a social or ethnic group that has preserved its traditional culture. It is predominantly functional, typically produced by hand for use by the maker or by a small group or community. Paintings are usually incorporated as decorative features on clock faces, chests, chairs, and interior and exterior walls. Sculptural objects in wood, stone, and metal include toys, spoons, candlesticks, and religious items.

Folk Art is an artistic painting, sculptures that are created to be beautiful or to express important ideas or feelings. We learn the ideas of people in the past through the collections of their jobs in the museum.it is predominantly functional, typically produced by hand for use by maker or by small group or community.

Having known what folk art is, we need to know why it belongs to the museum. Folk art belongs to the museum because it enables people to explore collections for inspiration, learning and enjoyment; it’s also a form of exhibition of ideas, beliefs, vision, or life. We learn from the past by looking at the artistic work done by people at the times as seen in Theora Hamblet and Gee Bends Quilt making.

Through museum, I was able to learn a lot from Theora Hamblet work, her work focuses on country side, religions and visions, I learn what her growing up days was like, what her house looks like (Hamblet hills) and the paintings of over the hill is home.Gee Bends quitters combine materials to form bold, abstract composition that reveals a genius for color and geometry. One look at Gee Bends gives one a sense of their originality and graphic impact.Gee Bends Quilt serves as an inspiration to other quilt makers around the world.

Folk art has to create a substantial amount of activity in the viewer's mind or heart. Good art can be a matter of good concept or excellent skills in execution, but I think great art touches the mind, heart or soul of the viewer.”A painting should evoke a thought, a memory or idea to the viewer. something you just cannot take your eyes off of. Something that you see that strikes your soul to the very depths, that opens your eyes and your mind to the beauty of it.”
