Colors have special meanings

A color has its own special meaning and sometimes is used as a symbol that represents something. Usually what a color represents is different from culture to culture. However, it can also have a variety of meanings, depending on what meaning a director adds to it. In other words, Intended colors can bring about some kind of intended meanings or emotions, which are planned by the director.

When I first saw this movie, Kill Bill, it was filled with vivid colors. The scenes evoked me of the ones in cartoon or animation movie. The most interesting scene was the night view of Tokyo, when the main character was riding yellow motorcycle, so I decided to make mosaic with this scene.

I think that in this scene, the black background represents the cruel society where trust is often betrayed and the yellow sweat suit which the main character is wearing represents her firm resolution of the revenge. These two colors--black and yellow--are in complementary relations, so they look more prominent, used at the same time. I guess the director deliberately made use of this idea.

After made the mosaic, I got interested in the contrast of darkness and brightness between the two colors, so I tried to focus on it. I thought many other ways to express it, and finally chose to take pictures in the night, because I thought it would be the best background to describe darkness. Also, to express brightness, I decided to take pictures of the light in the street, and here are those pictures.

What I want to express in these pictures is that the light means the intense desire for something, and the darkness means an obstacle that interrupts it, like a heartless society or something like that. As mentioned before, intended colors reflect particular meaning or emotion, and I don’t think I will be able to overlook “colors” from now on.

  1. I like the description you described from the black color. You give the scene a whole new and unexpected definition. And I like the idea you try to convey from the wo pictures. However, I was a little bit curious about the red color you put in the background of your mosaic. Does it just represents the light of buildings in the city or do you have another specific meaning?
