Does folk art belong in a museum?

To answer the question “Does Folk Art belong in a museum?” I thought about the standard of art first. What points defines some objects as an art? If pictures or objects have creativity and beauty, then it could be defined as an art. Besides, art reminds interest and impression from many people from children to senior citizens. With these points both Gee Bend’s Quilts and Theora Hamblett’s paintings are worth to be exhibited in a museum so that many people could see their works.

Theora Hamblett’s works attracted my interest when I looked her painting closely because I got impression about her painting technique which is using “pointlism”. She used purple, yellow, orange, and green for the leaves. The harmony of colors that she used in her trees is beautiful and unique. I could find lots of trees in her paintings because tree was the easiest thing to draw when she painted her picture. Also Gee Bend’s Quilts were creative and special because of the fabric patterns that he used in his works. These Quilts are made from generation to generation. They are still making their quilts nowadays. They used cheap materials like corduroy when they were quilting. Even though they put same fabrics in different part of the quilt, these fabrics mingled well together. Matches of each different fabric patterns are charming and well stitched. Therefore their works definitely correspond with the standard of art.

I think Folk art also has value to hang in the art gallery. Because Folk Art represents the environment, history, people, and custom of artist’s time well and from Folk Art we can suppose artist’s life style easily. In case of Korea, many folk arts are highly praised because of their meaning and artist’s sophisticated working skills. Korean Folk art express well the common people’s daily life with humor. One of the most famous folk art in Korea is Kim hong do’s “Seo-dang”. In this art, you can feel liveliness in character’s faces. This picture shows feelings of characters and atmosphere of painting clearly.

I drew painting with Theora Hamblett’s painting skill. I drew trees using technique “pointlism” and a child riding a bicycle. To my thinking my painting is not an art at all. To be considered as an art, there’ll be some kind of meaningful sense and unique working skills of art. My painting is nothing more than imitation of Theora Hamblett’s painting. Imitating somebody’s art or skill can never called as an art.

  1. I am really interested in the part which u mentioned the Korean Folk Art. It's a great example to support the significance of folk art in our daily life. I'd like to see them if one day I have a chance to visit Korea.
I also like your painting. Although we get inspiration from her painting skills, I think you still create your own way from your painting.
