Ideas on Folk Art before and after

Since we were little we were taught that works of art ere those statues and paintings that were kept in a museum. We were told that famous people created those pieces of art and that their prize was uncountable, but what if they were all wrong? What if other items sucha s quilts or ordinary people´s paintings could be considered art too?

At first we talked about what folk art meant, and I had never thought of little toys such as the Russian dolls to be art. Anything other than a painting or a sculpture wasnt in my definition of art. But yet again our definition of art is not as broad as it should be to include those little creations like folk art, which might not be as spectacular as a Piccasso, but it might have more meaning for a person or group of people.

When we got Theora Hamblett´s reading assigment, and after reading it, I still wasn´t convinced that her paintings could be considered art, because if what a woman does in her free time with more or less okay skills is considered art, the paintings I do at home should also be considered art, right?I mean, she followed the pointillism pattern in all her pictured but still.

Then we went to the museum and saw different types of folk arts, not just Theora´s paintings only. We also saw the Gee Bend´s quilts, who are a little isolated town in Alabam
a with almost no resources. The women in town would get together and create quilts from what they had. It could be an old shirt or a pair of jeans. So, what if my idea of art was a little to specific?Maybe art starts to be considered art when it defines a culture or it becomes a big part of it. Maybe art doesn´t have to be considered art for all of us. Maybe being able to create something like a quilt from almost nothing is the real piece of art!

All in all folk arts such as Theora´s paintings and the Gee Bend´s quilts are types of art, and we are the ones that have to decide if they are good or not. ou don´t have to like them to be honest and admit that they deserve to be in a museum as much as those Ancient Roman vases, or that Piccasso´s painting. Part of our town´s history or traditions can end up becoming art in years from now
so it´s better not to prejudge anything.

In relation with this blog I decided to create a little painting. What we see in it is the fall leaves barely covering the sun. I know I´m not good enough to be considered an artist, and it´s just for fun, althought I must admit that painting is a really good anti-stress therapy.

  1. You gave me the new thought and definition of Folk art. Folk art might not be regarded as art in the past becasue not every people could be convinced to believe them they are one typt of art. Maybe still some people don't think they are in today's society. It could depend on people, even they don't have the chance to be put in the museum and shown for everybody in the world. Once they are found and admired by some people, they are art.
Besides, I really like your painting, it's awesome!

  5. Cool!!!! The setting and colors are very different from us. I mean we all choose day time as our settings and worm colors to paint our trees. But in your picture, it's totally different. The blue background and black tree are denfinitely emphasizes those orange leaves. Nice!
