LOVE TRDITIONS, FORK ART

Nari. Shin(Riaa)

In all of country and culture, they have many of proper custom and they want to remember and preserve that customs. They think it is the origin of them and if it customs not being, they can’t born in this world. For this reasons, customs are always protected by people. People used many of method to protect their customs however the famous way is ‘ART’. People used to the art, such as pictures, dolls and something like that, to let their descendants know their life and to remember their ancestor’s life. Above all means what is the ‘Folk Art’.

Each country’s the work of folk art is different but its meaning is almost same. In other words, all artists’ art techniques are different from each other, but they all want to describe something which is they really love. Folk artists want to represent their life such as eating, clothing and thinking. In the picture which is drawn by Theora Hamblett who is a painter from Oxford, Mississippi contained her life including her family, animal and children. When I saw her painting, I can guess she really love her family, her place which was located in country side and her whole life. She used pointillism on her canvas with vivid colors and layer color dots. I think her painting looks so actual and lively since she uses those techniques. It was enough to represent her thinking on the canvas.

On the other hands, Pecolia Warner’s art work is little different from Theora Hamblett. She was a quilt maker from Yazoo City, Mississippi. She made many quilt with some kind of texture like corduroy. According the reading material, she always thought about religion when she worked on her quilt. Actually, I can find about her belief through the meaning of texture pieces’ color from her art work which is in the museum. Moreover, she wanted to represent to her childhood through her quilts. So she used her old clothes that she wore during her childhood.

In these two artists’ cases, we can guess their life and thinking trough their art works and that is the most important object in folk art. Their art works include all about them. Besides, Pecolia warnen did her art work on World War , so her quilts have some symbolic pieces and explain about the situations at that time. For this reasons, ‘Folk Art’ is belong to art museum. As those art works were exhibited, more people can see that and think about their ancestor. As the Korean proverb goes, reviewing the old and learning the new is a good attitude. Old is not always true but it give some good effects to us. It is exactly.

  1. I like the way you described about Folk Art.Though those art, people can understand the history, custom and life at the specific time when they are made. They can also gain something new or inspiration from those masterpieces. I like the proverb you mentioned in the end, I have the same proverb in Taiwan.
