What could be considered as an art?

Let’s say you drew a painting. No matter how it is good or bad, no one could deny the fact that this is a picture. Do you think it can fall into the category of art, or only the things that are created by an artist can be arts? In my opinion, it is not that important who created it. What really matters is whether it has something that is worth being considered as an art or not.

Nowadays the term art is largely used in two different ways. First, it is used to refer to general things that are created to represent beauty or the activities to make them. Secondly, it could be used only to refer to the things that show artists’ high quality of techniques or skills, which is especially called the fine art. Sometimes people get confused about the concept of art because of this. I think among two the second one is the true meaning of the word art.

Of course, everyone has a desire to seek beauty or try to create beautiful things to some extent. It means everyone has a potential to make things that can be considered artistic, so I can create an art and so can you. The thing is, however, totally different. Every picture cannot be an art, because everything does not have something artistic. Only the most beautiful or the highest level of things can considered as arts. Or, the art itself would be meaningless in the end.

What I want to say is, regardless of the creator of an art, something extraordinary can be an art and it also means that it is worth being exhibited in the museum. Therefore, even though folk arts came from the things that were originally used for practical purpose, they can be arts if they have something extraordinarily beautiful. Lots of things that are called folk arts are being exhibited now in the museum all over the world, which I think could support this.


This is the picture that I drew during the last class. I wanted to describe a tree that blossoms in spring, so I used warm colors to express it and imitated the way Theora Hamblett drew her pictures. I think, however, it could not be an art, because it is not that artistic. As I mentioned above, only artistic things can be arts, so mine never could be an art.
